Pullback identification

The market moves in two ways: impulse and correction.

Impulse Move: A strong price movement in one direction (up or down), driven by big players like banks and institutions.

Correction Phase: A slower, sideways movement where price stabilizes as retail traders buy and sell.

Impulse moves show strong momentum, while corrections are a temporary pause before the next move. In the next section, I will explain how this pattern looks in the market.

Zig-zag price chart in which impulsive moves are drawn as solid lines and corrective moves as dashed lines.
Impulsive moves (solid line) and corrective moves (dashed line).
Candlestick example. A single move down is an impulsive move. The F candle high broken by the O candle makes a valid pullback, because F is the lowest candle of that move. The R candle high and low are still protected, so the E and X candles inside the R candle move are not a valid pullback.
Valid and invalid pullbacks, example A.
Candlestick example. The M candle high taken out by the R candle makes a corrective move. When the R candle high and low are both protected, the move counts as a single leg (impulsive) and is not a pullback. Where R is the lowest candle and its high is taken out by the A candle, it is a valid pullback.
Valid and invalid pullbacks, example B.
